Dean Lewis is one of many citizens against the tax. There is a web site at http://home.earthlink.net/~lewis2/vote.nonewarktax/ where there are links supporting the data he was presenting. Stimulus money was granted to the city and the school districts. Duplicate programs like DARE could be cut from the City budget as the school district received stimulus money for this program. This is what happens when a mayor has been in office for 30+ years and thinks he owns the city.

  • I'm glad videos like this are easily avaliable to the public. I shocked at how easily those politicians steal so much money while this city is so easily tricked into eating their lies. The real shame lies on the mayor who obviously who only cares about shutting up anyone who may rob him of the money which he robbed from the people.

  • Also approved for the city of Newark: School Resource Officer Program ($150,000) Requested by the City of Newark. This program consists of a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program for K-12, with a parent program, in addition to a seventeen week long program for sixth graders that covers drugs, their influence on the mind and body, peer pressure and alternatives. That's 2 million dollars granted to Newark. Perhaps Mr. Smith is out of touch with reality.

  • For Newark schools: Education: $1,855,626

Recovery funds are being used in local school districts to preserve jobs in the education community. This is also a source of funding for programs like Head Start and Work Study.

  • On December 6, 2005 Mr. Smith was commened before the House of Representatives for "During his tenure, Newark has become a model for the country to follow. It has a $35 million surplus, a low crime rate, beautiful parks and well-maintained streets. Newark City Council meetings are efficient and exemplify Mayor Smith's ability to build consensus among the city's leadership." Also, the city Recreational Director David Zehnder stated in 2004 that the city had a 25 million dollar revenue surplus.

  • I find the comments made by both individuals at the podium deplorable - Please Newark residents contact our City Staff and get the TRUTH! Our City has NEVER tried, attempted, or hidden facts from the residents of this City!
