Tuesday November 4, 2008 at Walnut Creek Rifle Club indoor range. Don shoots an Erfurt 1917 P-08 Luger pistol. It is chambered for the 9MM Parabellum cartridge. Lugers are widely coveted and have a great visual appeal. They were manufactured to very precise fits between mating parts, and were expensive to make but were easily jammed if they became dirty, and were finicky about ammunition. The Luger P-08 was the standard Wehrmacht officers' sidearm during WWI, but was replaced in 1938 as standard by the Walther P-38, which is reliable and effective, and less costly to make. The Luger P-08 continued as substitute standard as German industry was unable to meet demand for the P-38 because of the pressures of wartime.
