http://www.karenrothnutrition.com Coffee, probably one of the most asked questions I get from clients. There are many conflicting reports about the problems and the benefits of drinking coffee. I think we need to take it back to the basics.everything in moderation.
The problem with coffee is that rarely do we stop with one cup. And its the prolonged constant use through out the day that can lead to problems.
Caffeine stimulates the adrenal glands which in turn causes the liver to release sugar into the blood stream. Thats was give you that caffeine lift. The body cannot tolerate this long term. It reacts by causing blood sugar fluctuations and even lowering your blood sugar and this can lead to fatigue, a weakened immune system, mood disorders, weight gain and poor digestion.
Caffeine can block the absorption of B vitamins, and can strip the body of magnesium, potassium, iron and trace mineral. No wonder so many of us are fatigued and cant sleep!
Prolonged use of caffeine can even lead to bone loss
My first advice would be to address what you put in your coffee. Are you using Splenda, Nutra Sweet or Sweet N Low? Replace it with Stevia or Xylitol. Are you still using non dairy creamers that are nothing more than artificial dyes and chemicals? Try using flavored liquid Stevia instead.

Then try limiting your coffee to 1 cup daily and substituting with a coffee alternative for the rest of the day.

My favorite is Dandy Blend. Its an instant herbal beverage made from dandelion root, chicory and beet roots, barley and rye grains.

• tastes like coffee but has no caffeine
• no acidity or bitterness
• contains all the goodness of dandelions
• dissolves instantly in hot or cold water

  • likes, 3 dislikes

  • I quit drinking coffee and replaced it with just hot water that I cut up a couple cloves of garlic and steep. It's actually really good tasting too.

  • That sounds interesting. Thanks for sharing.

  • Excellent video Karen, I couldn't have said anything better myself. I can also think of certain popular illegal drugs that effect the body in almost identical ways as caffeine does. It's not cool to be addicted to caffeine and people should cut back as much as possible, because addiction spirals out of control fast.

That Dandy Blend sounds pretty nice too, I'll have to try making some of that. Thank you!

  • Thanks for responding. FYI - the Dandy Blend says that if you use 2tbs it tastes like a strong cup of coffee and 3 tbs tastes like an espresso. I didn't think so. I like it best with 1 tbs.

  • Yes, 10 cups daily is really beating up your adrenal glands.

  • Excess coffee, more than one cup a day? im fucked.

  • What about decaf does it still have the same B vitamin / magnesium effect?

  • omg i drink a cup of coffee every day of the week i'm only 14 too and i hope i can replace it with something

  • I prefer ayurvedic roast, because its certified organic, and its the best tasting coffee substitute that I've tried thus far. I think the website is ayurvedicroast (*com).

  • you should be aware that coffee isn't actually an addiction per say it lowers the blood pressure in your brain so if u stop drinking it your brain restores it's self to normal blood flow levels how ever since you have been used to the lower blood pressure it gives you a strong headache and u want to get rid of it by drinking coffee otherwise you have to put up with headaches for a few weeks while you get used to the increased blood pressure which is why people stay on soft drinks and cofee

  • I drink coffee. soooo....... Yeh, You discriminatin' me?

  • I have about 5-6 cups a week but I'm only13 so I really should cut that down :) and thanks for the vid
