Urban Wildlife Thornton Lodge Community Centre




The Urban Wildlife Project aims to get local children and families interested in the nature and wildlife on the doorstep in Thornton Lodge. The project was successfully funded under the National Lottery's Community Wildlife funding.




The project started in April and meets at the TAG office every second Saturday. Over fifty children and young people have been involved in wildlife related activities, through this project. Children have been involved in clearing up litter on the Rashcliffe Road and Thornton Lodge road play areas, and planting wildflowers and herbs that will attract wildlife. They have used bug viewers to look and see what invertebrates are living in the parks. They are now making improvements to wildlife habitats, making bat boxes, bird boxes and bug hotels, to give more shelter for wildlife.




Children have been recruited from local schools and an article in the press. Families have also been involved, through two family celebration days in Rashcliffe park, that were very well attended, by up to 100 people. Therese involved cooking in the park, making bird feeders and insect homes and surveying the park to identify what they liked (flowers) and didn't like (litter!).
