At a recent Linux Aalto University talk Linus Torvalds, on camera, dropped an f-bomb and flipped NVidia the bird. You can see that here along with my opinion of.. || Join the chat: http://bit.ly/nixgoogleplus || of Why Linus is dissatisfied with NVidia's Linux support, the state of gaming on Linux, and what linux drivers and hardware has to do with it.

Yeah that's absolutely true. It was when D3D v8 came out that Microsoft came out with an API that was current and modern while OpenGL were fumbling and couldn't implement proper shader support. That is enough to kill the API + the fact that devs could sell games to 95% of pc users anyway even if they switched to directx.

DirectX lagged behind OpenGL for a long while, it wasn't until DirectX 8 that DirectX finally was better than OpenGL, it's also the same time people moved over to DirectX for game development. DirectX didn't just come out and take over, it took quite some time.

Here's the deal. When microsoft and everybody else was supporting OpenGL the foundation managed to fuck it up. So microsoft released DX and it fixed a lot of the bullshit devs had to deal with. It got popular. Now these open source hippies are unhappy because microsoft took advantage of releasing a superior product when OpenGL was fumbling

It's the same story every time. Open source foundations promise some new awesome thing > they can't deliver > Commercial platforms do it better

    ps osx rocks

Well its not that simple. First of all, directx and opengl are not rendering engines, but APIs (actually Opengl is a specification). They are tools with which can you make engines. Also, OpenGL dominates computer graphics industry; everything besides games on windows is on opengl. And which one is better... Ask 100 programers and you will get 200 opinions :) Basically opengl programers dont target pc gameing and dx programmers dont target anything else so there is little room for changes.

The stigma towards linux is undeserving. I gave it a chance a couple of months ago and I prefer it way more then windows and mac.
