BioNova and the students of South Colchester Academy gathered on Wednesday, September 15, to kick-off the 2010/2011 Sanofi-Aventis Biotalent Challenge (SABC) in Nova Scotia.
Life scientists from across the province were also on hand during the event to give students an idea of what a career in scientific research looks like. The scientists spent the morning sharing their experiences, successes and current projects with the students -- inspiring them to continue in the field of science education.
This is the thirteenth year that Nova Scotia has hosted the regional SABC, which is coordinated annually by BioNova. Marli MacNeil, CEO of BioNova, said it only made sense to launch the Challenge at the Brookfield school this year. "Science students from South Colchester Academy impressed me with their curiosity and hard work when they competed in the 2009/2010 SABC," she said. "That kind of interest in what science can do is the foundation of the life sciences industry."
Local MLA Gary Burrill was also a part of the celebration, offering students a few words of encouragement before launching SABC as well as National Biotech in the province.
The event came to a close around noon but not without leaving a lasting impression on students, sending them back to class feeling energized and excited for the 2010/2011 competition.
