Captured on Saturday afternoon, 26 July 2008, here is a video clip of the "Columbia Heights" (2001) Mural by Marela Zacarias which may be found on a building's exterior wall across from the newly constructed "DC USA / Columbia Heights Shopping Mall on Irving Street between 14th and 15th Streets in NW WDC.
The following represents excerpts that were copied & pasted from an email that I received from Marela Zacarias regarding is description:
"114 feet long ... the first section showed images of immigrants comiing into the United States - many of them finding repression and deportation. The middle part was about inter-racial relationships, and teenage pregnancy. One of the images had the picture of one of my student's sisters who died at the age of 18 after having 4
children. Then there was a section about the Farmer's market that used to occupy the lot in front of the mural. The last section was about gentrification. ... There is a wrecking ball destroying a building to open space for new commercial buildings - like Target! The mural ends with a picture of La Casa, where a man is being lifted from the floor
and at the end he is looking at the future with hope.
There were about 100 volunteers who participated in this mural and it was completed in 3 weeks during the summer of 2001."

sad that this mural has deteriorated so much. it got real beat up during the construction of the condos next door. The casa shelter is scheduled to be torn down soon, and developers have already bought the lot, I assume for more condos. gentrification to such an exaggerated extent!
