This video has a telltale mistake built-in. After using a dynamic, I didn't punch the 20db pad on the preamp. Thought about taking it down, but this seems to be a popular video. ...a good example of over-driving?

Why didn't I catch this while recording. I really don't recall, but I do remember a lot of mic switching that day.

I will be re-recording a show on this microphone - with the 20db pad.

Thanks for listening in!

Best,
Mark

  • Audio sounds strange... like distorting somehow! Or clipping. And the output is way louder than other NewMediaGear videos. For instance check TLM102.

    What's wrong..???

  • You're right about the audio.

This is the result of me not punching the 20db pad. In a day, we can swap out four or five mics. The condensers are much hotter and need the pad.

How did it pass 'quality control' ; )

The video was recorded after a looong day and my ears must have been oblivious.

This is definitely one that should be re-recorded.

I thought about removing it, but decided to keep it up.

Anyway - thank you for listening and taking time to comment.

  • The proximity effect combined with the distorsion sound like typical radio or TV commesial.

Pretty embarrassing if you want to show the real quality of the microphone - why not just do a retake?

  • Typical radio and television spots have made me a lot of money over the decades. I like them!

Not embarrassing at all. I make mistakes every day.

BTW: Distortion is the word you were trying to spell in your comment? ...not distorsion

Another show on this mic is a good idea, but the original will remain.

    Thanks for the comment.

  • Isn't the NT1 a side-address microphone? I'm about 95% sure it is. So pointing it right at you, like in the video, would be like talking to the side of Shure SM58.

  • @arthadley

The NT1 (and NT1-A) are side address. However, the mic I start off with is a front-address NTB.

  • Thats because condenser mics are extremely sensitive to every nuance. There supposed to do that. Thats why you record in a quiet space.

  • To my ear you are overprocessing your mics. Your sound was over compressed and slightly distorted.

  • @chobbaaz "There's your sign," Then the Rode's is doing it's job. Get a differant cooling fan or system.

  • hi does this work on mac with logic and do i need a mixer to get this working or just any interface

  • I need to buy another mic asap and I thought about this one. I currently have a Sterling Audio ST55. I"m wondering what you think about the two vs. each other?

  • I'm listing on crappy speakers so i can't tell. But do you mean the 20db pad as in Minus 20db?

  • this is a great mic...i have had it for 5 years...its my workhorse studio mic...

  • Is it possible for one to use a condensor mic and all the equipment and software used in a recording studio all hooked to some nice stage loudspeakers and have a perfect studio quality sound if one were to sing for a live audience???

  • @chobbaaz

It suppose to do that. :-)

NT1A is a very sensitive, and in the manual it said that it intended for studio use. That means you must soundproof, isolate source of sound, and treat the room with some acoustics.
