To me the point is not if Rather is racist or not. It's the way the general media glossed over the comment to make it go away. You have to admit that If ANY conservative, Beck, Rush, Palin, Romney, etc, would have said this, Al Sharpton and the like would be after their head. It would be all over the news 24/7.
Look, I'm generally a centrist but the fact that this was ignored by the general media draws a big question mark to people like me. Is the media biased towards liberals? Looks so.

In Texas Watemelons are often sold by the side of the Road by people of all colors. Dan Rather is from Texas. His reference is uniquely Texan, and thus doesn't make sense to those who never lived in the state.
For people from Texas selling watermelons in summer is supereasy and thus if you can't sell them in Summer you're a terrible salesperson.
For people from elsewhere it sounds racist, because Watermelon in is thought of as a Black thing. Everyone enjoys watermelon in Texas.
