I teach my pup on the left since we don't have sidewalks and we walk on the side of the road. This puts her on the shoulder in a safer position from oncoming traffic.

The dog can be on either side, it is the handler's decision. Unless doing competition obedience or something like that, it is a personal decision. I hate it when people make up absolutes based on assumptions or anecdotal evidence and present it as scientific fact- they do everyone else such a disservice, not to mention make themselves look like idiots to the well-educated! Oh, well, to each his own...
