Peru Free Trade Scam

Video from a demonstration in Portland Oregon concerning Oregon Rep. Earl Blumenauer's intent to vote for a trade deal with Peru. Having failed to pass a NAFTA-esque trade deal for the 33 countries of South America, the Bush administration is seeking to negotiate deals with each one separately.

Despite promises to increase prosperity, the North American Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and similar trade pacts have been extremely harmful to the majority of Oregonians and people around the world. These free trade policies have led to:
* The export of millions of high paying U.S. jobs.
*Declining living standards for the U.S. middle class.
* Incresed poverty in developing nations.
* The weakening of key environmental, labor and food safety laws.

The people of Peru oppose this deal, knowing that it will displace and disenfranchise farmers, much like NAFTA did in Mexico, where 1.2 to 3 million small scale farmers were forced out of work. Though the government and big business supports this deal, recently 4 million Peruvians took to the streets to oppose it.

As well as Peru, the Bush administration is trying to expand the NAFTA model of trade to three other countries: Colombia, Panama and South Korea. This is the biggest expansion of NAFTA in over a decade. These trade deals would be harmful to Oregonians and devastation for millions of poor people abroad.

It's not too late to stop this train wreck. Hard to believe as it may seem, our legislators will respond to their constituents if they hear from them in sufficient numbers and with sufficient force.

Peru is not Mexico or Argentina . Just 2 to 4 % of the soil is fertile land; our agricultural products dont compete in quantity but in quality. The majority of the farmers use their land just to grow vegetables for their own consumption not for trade. The small companies could use the FTA as an opportunity to sell their products to bigger and wealthier markets instead of selling their products in the poor and small internal market.
