Police Kill Man With Knife

Bellevue Police shot and killed a 41-year old Bellevue man in his Eastgate house near the intersection of 151st Court SE and SE 46th Place (in Bellevue, Washington). This incident started out at about 10:00 PM on July 16, 2007 when police responded to a domestic-disturbance/suicide 911 call made from a family member of the disturbed man. They were setting up a perimeter around the house, trying to call in, and making plans for entry when two officers observed through a window the suspect endangering a family member with a large kitchen knife (I believe there were about three people in the house trying to calm-down/subdue the suspect). The two police had to respond quickly to this new threat: they broke through the front door and with guns drawn repeatedly told the suspect to put down the knife. When the suspect refused and continued threatening the victim, Officer Andrew Popochock deemed it necessary to use deadly force, opening fire on the man to protect the family member. The suspect, who would later be identified as Todd Werner Madsen, was pronounced dead at the scene and no one else was harmed. The two officers that were directly involved with this incident were put on paid administrative leave while this was under investigation (this is standard policy for any officer involved shooting).
