György Garay

He studied violin with Oszkár Studer, József Bloch and with Jenő Hubay, chamber music and composition with Leó Weiner at the Budapest Academy of Music. His first appearance in 1926 took place at Vienna, Austria, his Budapest premiere dates to 1927. From 1927 to1930 a member of the Hungarian Trio he continued, during the next three-years period, as a first violinist of the Garay Quartet, and then from 1940 to 1945 he performed with the Ensemble of the Capital (Fővárosi Zenekar), followed by an engagement from 1945 to 1951 at the Hunarian State Opera, and from 1951 onwards he worked as the State Symphonic Orchestra as concertmaster. He taught at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music from 1949 to 1961 and from 1960 he worked at Leipzig, then Eastern Germany , as concertmaster of the Radio Symphonic Orchestra and Prof. of the Mendelssohn College of Music. Numerous recordings materialised in Hungary and Eastern Germany .He performed at premiers of many violin compositions by contemporaries (György Ránki, Ferenc Szabó, Rezső Sugár, Sándor Jemnitz, Béla Tardos and Sándor Veress) . He played on his own Stradivari.
