Warner Bros. tried to capitalize on Berle's popularity from his "TEXACO STAR THEATER" TV show by making this movie, without calling attention to the fact it was BECAUSE of television he was starring in this, as they and other studios were beginning to suffer a steady decline in weekly theater attendance, due to TV becoming an easier and cheaper alternative than "a night at the movies".
TCM sometimes schedules this, 'gccoley'. Watch for it...
Nice little trib to Jolson. A number of comments are from people who knew nothing of Jolson. He did more for blacks than any other performer. Think about it, Sammy Davis Jr. for years did a Jolson trib in his act as did a number of other black performers. He financed the first all black show on Broadway. His supporting cast in Big Boy were all black...no one else would have had the courage.
c'mon- in no way was berle intending to be racist. he was making fun of jolson's need to always be on and act like the whole world was his stage every breathing moment.
talk about aham and thats what this was and it is not funny.
