Ashley's story, as told by her parents:
"On April 24, 2007 Ashley fell off our playground and got a concussion. In the ER they said she was looking good and did not do a CT scan. She randomly complained over the next week that her head hurt. One week after her concussion she she said her head hurt, then threw up. I took her in again to the Dr. and he said with concussions there head can hurt over the next month. She went another few days to that weekend and had a couple of days were she complained more that her head hurt and she would threw up. We figured something wasn't right and took her in again to her pediatrician. The date was May 7th, 2007. They sent us up to Primary Children's for a CT scan. During that scan they found a tumor in Ashley's brain located inside the stem called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma. They immediately started Ashley on a steroid called dexamethazone because there was a lot of swelling in her brain. Looking back we had noticed Ashley had become more clumsy and the week before she was diagnosed we noticed her smile had changed, but that was it. They admitted us to the hospital for the next few days. There we learned the seriousness of Ashley's tumor. The gave her 6 weeks to live if we did not do any treatment and 1 year if we did treat her. Basically saying she has no chance to survive this. We didn't want to believe what they were saying. Our entire world was flipped upside down. We wanted to believe Ashley would be the exception and that she would make it. Over the next 6 weeks Ashley did radiation everyday. She took a chemo called Temodar everyday for the next 42 days, finishing near the end of June. Near the end of July we had another MRI to determine what had happened with the radiation and chemo. The tumor had shrunk by 31%, we were thrilled beyond belief. At this point Ashley was showing no symptoms. The staff at Primary Children's were thrilled. They had never seen such a great response to radiation. At the beginning of Oct. Ashley had another MRI to show that her tumor had doubled in size. We were devastated yet again. Quickly Ashley began showing symptoms of her tumor enlargement. They started her on steroids again and she remained on them for the rest of her life. By the middle of Oct. her entire right side went weak. She began coloring with her left hand instead of her right. She started limping, and talking slurred. In the middle Nov. another MRI showed continual growth. By the end of Nov. Ashley's quality of life was pretty poor. She had a hard time speaking, eating, & she couldn't walk anymore. At the beginning of Dec. we started Ashley on a new trial chemo Avastin/Irrinotican. Daily we noticed improvement in Ashley. Within a couple of weeks she could walk again, it was still hard for her but she could do it, her talking got clearer. We noticed improvement in every area until the end of Dec. then is tapered off and she plateaued. During Jan., Feb., and beginning of March Ashley took her downward spiral that would end her life on March 20. Her symptoms just kept getting worse and worse. Because Ashley was suffering so much we were grateful her difficult fight was over, but heartbroken that our sweet little angel was gone. We look forward to seeing her again someday and will miss her everyday until that sweet reunion. "
We love you so much, Ashley. Always look out after your mom, dad, and little siblings, Alice and Cole. We hope you have a wonderful time in Heaven. We'll see you soon
