http://www.schoolimprovement.com/topics/differentiation. As ELL student populations have dramatically increased, nearly every district now faces the challenge of successfully teaching English language learners. For many schools, the influx of English language learners occurred very quickly, leaving little time to train teachers and leaders on how to manage this acute demographic shift. Because of a lack of training, many educators are left frustrated and overwhelmed trying to meet the needs of their ELL students.
While teaching English language learners certainly presents a challenge, it is one that can be overcome with research-based practices that benefit every student.

This film demonstrates that core content learning can be enhanced through using a students native language. This is a solid tool in teaching English to non-natives while learning fundamentals of content and concepts. This strategy helps to support the multicultural classroom with a language component that devolpe learning skills.

Sometimes it seems as though teachers are afraid that students cannot become proficient in their L2 if they ever use their L1. I believe that this is not the case, and sometimes allowing the students to express certain ideas in their L1 will give them the confidence they need to participate in class and communicate with their classmates.

Using ELLs native language can help foster their acquisition of English because they feel free to use their native language vocabulary that is not fully yet can help them in the beggining while acquiring the new language.
