This video is just to demonstrate the tonal differences between 20 year old filter caps VS new ones.
The clips are close miked with a SM57 and the settings are the exact same,
I've included before and after photo's to show that the mike position hasn't changed either.
Note sure if it comes across clearly with uTubes compression, but the amp has more punch and bite to the tone.

  • I was kinda bummed when I recapped my 800 - it needed to be done, but definitely made it brighter, which it really didn't need! Oh, well...Just roll the treble and presence back a little more!

  • @Prestostark Yeah, it's more that it tightens up the low end so the high end is more present. I kept the EQ the same in this vid to show the difference. When you adjust the tone controls, the low end is more punchier with the new caps, it's loose and wooly at the same setting with the old caps.

  • I agree Paolo, Anyone who knows anything about Marshalls would take an 800 or Silver Jube over a JVM :)

  • @thenoonesrock You got that right!!

I've played DSLs and TSLs and would pick JCM800 or JMPs any day of the week. Would love to own a Silver Jub sometime.

  • the new sound is worse in my opinion...less punch in the face

  • @hoikevinhoi That's nice :-)

  • The second clip is better. The lows are tighter and chewier. That will mic very well in the studio and on stage.

  • Its amazing those caps speed up the tempo and untune the guitar a hair... lol Jokes Jokes It definently sounds better good work I'm about to do my twin hope it tightens it up also

  • First one, the old caps sounds better, heavier, though you could always adjust your eq to compensate. Like your videos Paulo, i have a 4010 Marshall 50W combo, these are great amps. I always wanted to try one of the newer one's but couldn't ever afford it. Reading a lot of reviews most people prefer the older amps and the newer stuff doesn't seem to cut it the same!

  • i have to agree... first one sounds better...~V

  • @yeptwasme duh

  • Tthe only difference I notice is strumming patterns.

  • new caps sound brighter, I like brighter :-)

  • hi mate ive got the same amp and was wondering what volume u had this amp at to get the level of gain also were u sing an overdrive pedal?. i cant get mine past one without destroying my ears. thanks
