Paisajes means landscapes. It is a programmatic piece by Sonia I. Morales-Matos and it tries to portrait the beautiful landscapes o f Puerto Rico. It is a one movement concerto with contrasting tempos that resemble the Spanish influenced mapeyé, the bolero and the seis chorreao -which are popular genres in the Puerto Rican folklore. The piece was originally commissioned by the Puerto Rican Cultural Association of Dayton. The piece was originally written for cuatro and orchestra. The cuatro is a native string instrument from Puerto Rico. The piece was originally premiered in September, 1997 by the Dayton Philharmonic . Since then , it has been performed consistently in Puerto Rico. Since its premier, the composer felt the need to write another version that could make the music more accessible to a wider audience. The use of the cuatro seemed limited because at the time of Paisajes's composition, there were only a limited number of classical trained musicians with the experience and level of performance required by the piece.
The inspiration for a new universal voice came after sharing with Mrs. Dennisse Rodriguez, violist of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. The viola's beautiful sound and personality, it's singing tone, flexibility and register , reminiscence the melancholic sound of the cuatro .
The use of the viola is mostly lyrical with a cuasi improvisational section acting as a coda. The nature of the instrument allows for the experimentation with other colors by incorporating double strings, pizzicati and bow attacks. In Paisajes , the viola is the voice of a nostalgic soul yearning to free itself from the burdens of time and distance and find itself in the mountains, beaches, and conquistador's cities of Puerto Rico
