I stumbled upon a group of young men involved in a new sport in NYC while visiting Union Square. I'd gone to Union Square to support Critical Mass and vloggers who opposed NYC's new requirements for "permits" and "insurance" for people shooting video. I thought the "story" of Flatland BMX was quite interesting. Enjoy the show and the explanations.

  • america is nothing but american idol, skatebording, and a bunch of other typical interests.riding flat is extremely difficult hence not many people have the patience or dedication to stick with it and make it more well known.if it was as common as baseball or football there would be an explosion of rides across the us.

  • I like skateboarding also but not most other sports. Your point about difficulty is well taken but there is also the problem of expense.

I believe there is a great potential for this sport...all it needs is for some celebrity to get involved in it or for some news story to draw attention to it.

This sport is more challenging than most. It really is something like acrobatics, juggling, ballet--very artistic.

  • randolfe, you asked the wrong kid, kevin jones did innovate the basis of modern day flatland riding, but even though tricks on bkes are ancient, flatland as a sport started around 1979.

  • To me, anyone who kndew anything was an expert. I've been watching musical shows from Japan that have arial acts, clowns rolling in hoops, etc. Some of these stunts could be worked into that type of thing very easily. History of bike tricks would be interesting to explore. Thanks

  • it will never be discovered, skateboarding is popular because a good one can cost 100$ a good flatland bike can be more than 1000$ plus its hard, 900$ into mine, i still suck

  • Is about thhe institution of Flatland...because kevin was the firt in putting out new styles to the called old freestyle. I have magazines "BMX PLUS" that confirm the comments from the editors of those days.

  • Kevin Jones is/was a great flatland rider but Flatland started long before him. Bob Haro is the guy that invented the sport.

  • Well it's nice to see that someone else has taken an interest in Flatland.

  • the kid you ask didnt know his history...lol He's good in pretending to be smart.

  • its undiscovered,,, i.e underground.. i.e we dont make money,,

flatlanders know what it is..and maybe a few other people..but 90% of the world go "wtf?" if you tell them you ride flatland.... hense undiscovered
