This is not the version they play on the BBC before the shipping forecast.
Similar but not quite right.

wonderfully soothing and evocative. I still listen to it regularly. guaranteed to bring us close to those at sea or away from home. So many difficulties in so many lives. Be strong!

Rumour has it that on the LW frequency on Radio 4, you can hear the shipping forecast as far away as Canada. Strange but true. And desertbadger has it right in 1, as music is easier to tune into than the spoken word.

It was a sound to mariners that warmed the heart and calmed the mind, hundreds or even thousands of miles from home, it meant that all was well in Britain.
The waves and storms would melt away, and then it would come,Tyne, Dogger,..... Lundy, Fastnet, Irish Sea, visibilty good, wind Westerly, force 3-5..... even the various names and the sea conditions would sound reassuring.
Even sailors and ships from other nations would tune in and listen, such was the accuracy of the forecasts.

This piece of music is a signal to sailors and cet that the Shipping Forecast is to follow and that they should ready a pencil and paper. Interesting backstory about the BBC radio chap. True? The sequence was Sailing By, then the poetic Shipping Forecast followed by Radio 4 closing down for the night, with the announcer wishing us nightbirds a peaceful night. The memories this evokes are too powerful to mention. I heard this sequence for many nights of many years and it kept me going.
