Cuba expert and member of the Venceremos Brigade, Kenneth Jones recently
returned from trips to Cuba and Angola. Jones provides detailed information
and insight into the history and current state of struggle by the government
of Angola as it faces the U.S.-backed rebel forces and the American-supplied
South African forces trying to overthrow the government. Interspersed with
Jones comments are sections recorded from Cuban TV of three one-hour
documentaries about the Cuban armed forces' participation in the defense of
the Angolan government. Relevant portions of previous programs with John
Stockwell are also interwoven into the program. John ran the Angolan program for the CIA in the early 1970s.

Recorded December, 1988
Stockwell interview recorded February 16, 1989

  • ...shift in US policy and betrayal by the CIA forced SA to withdraw. It was only the Cubans who remained, doubling their troops to fight groups opposing a communist led MPLA regime. SA re-entered the war following an appeal for help by one of those groups and also to oppose Chinese intervention. The Soviet backed Cubans were finally forced out of Angola following their defeat by vastly outnumbered SA forces at Quito Quanavale & the passing of UN resolution 626. After the war, it was SA troops..

  • I was there & that's nothing like I remember it. South Africa NEVER invaded! We were helping to develop Angolan infrastructure when a civil war broke out. A small contingent of SA troops were sent to protect engineers & labourers but then the Soviets & Cubans saw an opportunity for strategic expansion which then sadly escalated into a long & brutal war. SA were about to withdraw when the US asked us to help them fight this aggression but just as we were about to liberate Luanda, a significant..
