I know I can install Pidgin, of course. But this ruins the out of the box experience a bit. Just by a little bit. :)

You can install Pidgin separately from Ubuntu Software Center. Anyway Empathy isn't so bad but I prefer Pidgin.

Well, I'm using multiple protocols so Pidgin is a bit more useful.
