It's not about the visuals alone. The context factor comes in when you add music. This vid would look completely different with Death Metal music over it.

This is Sam Peckinpahs movie. But of course U dont get it do U? Made in 70's this was agaist everything that hollywood wanted but Sam had the balls. Best antiwar movie ever made !

This must be the first cut of wartime footage considered for the film. Fascinating, but I can see why it was rejected: it fails to convey the sense of impending doom so dominant in the picture.

The actual opener works quite well.

So whats the name of this music? I know it was the theme of the Hitler Youth, hence it being used int he film, however it is still taught in schools all over Europe today. The English equivalent would be "Riding along on the crest of the wave" or similar!

@BasinBictory Actually, I knew a guy who was ex-SAS, his uncle was in the SS, and I showed him the opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan. He sat there smiling and said "Thats was my world, and I loved it!" He wasn't joking. As he said there are 'Meat & Veg' troops but then there is the cutting edge, they are born, not made. So, what you say is true of the rank and file.
