Lots of factors to blame.
1) no clear rules of engagement
2) no clear chain of command
3) inadequate logistical back up
4) no immediate air support
Would a US Marine unit have capitulated in the same way? Probably not. But the Marines would have known that once the shooting started they would get support. Lastly and most importantly, the Serbs would have known that If they killed Marines - there would be very serious payback indeed. The Dutch were poorly supported conscripts hung out to dry.

Amazing how people dump the blame on the only ones there: the Dutch. Srebrenica is the dodgiest post WWII chapter in Eur. history. The Dutch were outnumbered & very lightly armed. The Serbs came with tanks and artillery. When the Dutch called their ALLIES for air support this was REFUSED. Every time! Only a couple of DUTCH F16s present were flying sorties against the Serbs. The Dutch were betrayed by ALL there allies. Dodgy indeed! A disgrace for all Allies refusing to respond to calls for aid

I hope he is telling this under oath so he can be charged for committing perjury. Hypocritical lying conservative racist. The Dutch requested four times air support but some UN general refused this. No one was handcuffed eather.
