hahha OMG I had the same problem. There was absolutely NO indication that you just had to press up and down to get the damn thing going! I literally just tried jumping up and down trying to work physics to go underneath to no avail.
I didn't find out until years later and finally completed this game on my own. I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one that couldn't figure this out.

By luck I managed 2 get under da barrel by jumpin on it repeatedly. I had no issues beatin da game wit Knuckles. I found out da solution last summer after 14yrs!!!!! Now I look 4ward 2 that part when I play it wit Sonic

Think that's sad? I read about using Up & Down on barrels in an issue of GamePro way back when Sonic 3 was released. However, I tried it on the VERY FIRST barrel in Act 1, which is the ONLY "buoyant" barrel you can't use Up & Down on in the entire Zone. ><

@Sirhc7000 Really? It seemed intuitive to me to press up and down that on my first try, considering they move a little up and down on their own without doing anything.

OMG i timed out so may times at this part -.- i could only ever complete the game with knuckles because of it! took me literally years to work out how to get past :L
