After it's establishment in 1948, Jewish musicians from Baghdad and Cairo immigrated to Israel. They were masters in Arabic music, but their music was not valued in the new homeland. The ongoing Arab-Israeli war left no room for their their identity as Arab-Jews. Cafe Noah was the one place where their music continued and culture thrived, despite the odds.

  • Oh, one more thing. As far as "Arab-Jews," there is a very good reason why we are the most right wing of Israelis so again you are talking about false things. Jews lived in "Arab Lands" for more than 2000 years before Arabs even existed. "arab-Jew" is a misnomer (to say the least), a Jew isa Jew is a Jew, and we Mizrachi know this better than anyone. 1 million of us were made refugee by Arabs, who also stole more than 1 B US in assets 9in 48 value!).

  • without going into the self-destructive question "who was first" (answer: the dinosaurs - and look what happened to them) I believe that "Arab-Jew" refers to the identify of a person who lives or born in an Arab culture (speaking), the same way you use "American Jew" as well "European Jew", Polish Jew. German Jeweven Israeli-Arab

  • oh yeah, almost forgot, try to read Inbal Pearlson book Simcha Gdila Halayla,

and watch Cafe Noah and Taqasim

  • utter nonsense. I am a Mizrachi Jew and your claim that the music was not valued is ridiculous. It has shaped current Israeli music and culture ad naseum. Saying such things is nt only pointless, it is false and as such a double waste of both your time and reader's time.

  • it is well documented that these musicians were not valued at all by the mainstream Israeli culture they have suffered poverty and artistic decay. The few that survived like Felix Mizrachi were a model for a new generation of Israeli musicians but this happened only in the last 15 years.

  • Most Mizrachim hate being called anything "arab" seeing as how we have suffered and died under their boot since they first swet out o THIER homeland,Arabia. Most Jews tend to call themselves Jewish-Americans,not the converse since to most, they identify first and foremost as Jews. While semantics do not seem important, the converse usage is manipulated by the few dozen Revisonist trying to make careers by maligning their homeland,I have no need for a book when I am a middle aged Mizrachi Israeli.

  • "Well documented.": Pray tell, have you ever even been within a hemisphere of the nation? I am sure you read Revisionsm, but do you try to balance your sources by reading opposing views? If yourcontentions were even half right, wy do you imagine Mizrachim almost to a person vote hard right?By your contention it should be a diametric opposite!
