In this video, I decided to shake it up a bit and make a comparison video. The song being compared, Real Love, has its origins in Girls & Boys, Real Life, and other songs. John did not begin formally calling it Real Love until his trip to Bermuda. The demos he recorded for the song can be found in my uploads.

Anyway, this was the second "new" song by The Beatles and it was released in 1996 in conjunction with the second installment of The Beatles: Anthology. It was produced by Jeff Lynne. The released version differs a bit from the version John recorded. Jeff Lynne, the producer, speeded it up and the "official" version of this song is almost an entire step higher than the original demo. A lot of fans liked the song (including myself), but many others (some friends of mine and I am sure many other people) hated it because of the "Chipmunk" sound. So for this video I have enclosed both versions. The official release of Real Love as released by The Beatles in 1996 is first, the second version of Real Love (found at around 3:53 or so) is the final mix of the song as completed by the remaining Beatles, but it is played at the original speed as John's demo. See which one you like better.

I think both are good takes, but I really favor the second one better. Although, and perhaps this is just because I am used to the official version, it sounds just a tad bit too slow. If it had a slight increase in speed, it might be more commercial. But I like it all the same.

  • Maybe the best version would be to use the original pitch, but a faster tempo.I don't understand why they didn't do that in the first place.

  • Part of it was because of the quality. They had to make it suitable for release so they tried anything and everything to make it as suitable for a release as possible.

  • The Beatles always did stuff like that so its not as if they were departing from usual studio practices. Anyway when the song was redone for the Anthology, the software to change tempo and keep pitch was probably not very satisfactory.

  • This is true. Especially on their later stuff, they usually lowered or raised the pitch ever so slightly. The songs that come to mind right off hand are Strawberry Fields Forever, Rain, and Here Comes the Sun.

  • @BurtBenz I did it, check my channel, I kept the original pitch, so no chipmunks there, but I speeded it up to match the final version, so I could sync it with the video. it's the "final speed original pitch" video I uploaded.

if I did it a home with a regular home pc and the anthology 2 cd as the source, THEY COULD HAVE DONE IT TEN TIMES BETTER IN THE STUDIO!!!.

  • I like them both. I'm about to upload a video of real love CHIPMUNKED, and it sounds good.

  • So in other words, they sold themselves out for a hit?

  • I fully agree!
