From the viewpoint of an atheist, the very best feature of the Bible is that it refutes itself. Statistics indicate that few Christians have read the entire Bible. Instead, most are content to quote their favourite passages -- those that they imagine validate their emotionally motivated beliefs -- those that can be gleaned from Christian websites.

Far from revealing itself as the "inerrant word of God," the Bible is an internally contradictory anthology that was written and revised for sociopolitical purposes relevant to ancient times. The Bible's multi-author flaws reveal themselves as contradictions, anachronisms, and thoroughly unpleasant "actions". These are the chief reasons that Christians deconvert.

Theists are incorrect to think that atheists are trying to hurt them by nudging them towards seeing the Bible for the flawed product of ancient imaginations that it really is.

Those who view the Bible in this realistic light are less likely to undergo traumatic crises of faith.

"A thorough reading and understanding of the Bible is the surest path to atheism." ~ Donald Morgan

"Properly read, the Bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived." ~ Isaac Asimov

"The bible must be seen in a cultural context. It didn't just happen. These stories are retreads. But, tell a Christian that
-- No, No! What makes it doubly sad is that they hardly know the book, much less its origins." ~ Isaac Asimov

  • I don't know what to be more worried about, Literal Christians who haven't read the Bible or those who HAVE yet still adhere to it's words literally.

  • @Treblaine

Good point! The first are ignorantly obstinate, the latter are obstinately ignorant. I think that persisting in delusion despite being acquainted with the evidence requires more of a deliberate cognitive distortion, while founding delusion largely on another's word lacks intellectual rigor.

The point of the video is that open-minded truth-seekers who actually compare the Bible's contradictions are more likely to overcome dissonance and deconvert.

  • I really like this video & I urge you musekiteer, to please consider a re-upload it with a new title. I think that the words in the title (and tags) aren't common enough to show up on searches. I just hate to see this vid sit here being ignored....it's the kind that can make a fence sitter really think about reality. Just my humble opinion.

  • @bodeezy

I'm willing to rethink the tags, but not the title. Why? The title upsets nitpicking Christians who are unable to come to terms with the realities within the content.

  • Yes BT, There is a hugely significant difference to reading the whole book yourself, and only ever hearing the happy, feel-goody parts that your preacher will tell you. Your preacher will tell you how loving his god is, and how wonderful the afterlife will be. But he'll never tell you how his god kills innocent children or forces rape victims to marry their attackers.

  • I daresay that one or two theists could work this out -- particularly if they actually listened to the video. As it is, they are merely engaging in typical nit-picking and whining. In the total absence of evidence, it's all that they can do.

I could change the video's title to "Oft Quoted, but Rarely *Completely* Read", but I refuse to bow to theistic whining.

  • @BattleshipTx

The Bible is the most quoted because Christians keep using it to promote their views. It is rarely read because if it were read more, Christians would reject most of it because of its violence, genocide, sexism, and intolerance.

  • Try listening to the video.

An oxymoron describes a phrase such as "jumbo shrimp" -- conjoined and contradictory. (Contradictory merely describes examples such as the Bible where verses say completely different things.) Your theist buddy misapplied the term -- aside from being incorrect in his argument.

Try coming up with something valid.

  • Like the guy below says, your title is an oxymoron. Unless the quoter is clairvoyent he must have read it, and so it is either: "rarely quoted and rarely read" or "often quoted and often read" and could even be "often read and rarely quoted" if it didn't inspire quotation, but cannot be the exact combination you managed to choose. You (or someone who tells you aboutit) have to read it in order to quote it in most cases.

  • It's a puzzle for you to figure out.
