Dr. Hector Ruiz, Chairman & CEO, AMD, was the featured guest speaker at the 2006 Internet Caucus Advisory Committee Speakers Series event on Wednesday, March 15, 2006.

Dr. Ruiz spoke to the Congressional Internet Caucus about the importance of technological innovation and its impact on the U.S. competitiveness agenda and the future of the technology industry. Dr. Ruiz, Electronic Business Magazine's "CEO of the Year" for 2005, will highlight some of AMD's innovative efforts, including the "50x15 Initiative," which seeks to empower 50 percent of the world's population with affordable basic Internet access by the year 2015. AMD is a global company founded in 1969 and headquartered in Sunnyvale, California.

Born in Piedras Negras, Mexico, Dr. Ruiz earned bachelors and masters degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Texas-Austin and a Doctorate in Electronics from Rice University. After joining AMD in January 2000, Ruiz was appointed as Chairman of the Board in April 2004. This month, President Bush appointed Dr. Ruiz to President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), a council comprised of 23 leaders from the private sector, academic and research communities who advise the President on issues related to technology, scientific research priorities, and math and science education. In addition, Dr. Ruiz currently serves on the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC), which provides industry-based advice and expertise to the President on issues and problems related to implementing national security and emergency preparedness communications policies.

Past speakers of the Internet Caucus Advisory Committee Speaker Series have included: Internet founding fathers such as Vint Cerf, Tim Berners-Lee and Marty Cooper as well as industry leaders like Bill Gates, Michael Eisner and Meg Whitman.

This event is hosted in conjunction with the Internet Caucus and its Co-Chairs, Senators Burns (R-MT) and Leahy (D-VT) and Congressmen Goodlatte (R-VA) and Boucher (D-VA).
