This year we recognize the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands. Remembrance events and activities will be held across Canada and in the Netherlands, providing opportunities for Canadians to learn about Canada's role in the liberation of the Netherlands.

History

The Liberation of the Netherlands, from September 1944 to April 1945, played a key role in the culmination of the Second World War, as the Allied forces closed in on Germany from all sides. The First Canadian Army played a major role in the liberation of the Dutch people who had suffered terrible hunger and hardship under the increasingly desperate German occupiers.

  • Thank you, Canadian forces, for liberating my father's family from a POW camp in Holland during WWII. It's because of you that I'm here - a proud Canadian. ♥ Joy

  • What a powerful video and final statement:

"It doesn't come free... we've given up an awful lot, and they're out there... under the stones."

  • Thank you Canadian forces! love from the Netherlands!

  • @ Victor.Thank you for the answer. All you brave men.

  • @berrycccc Of course, there were a lot of nazifriends too, but remember that the Netherlands have a large common frontier, so...there were yet "love-stories" in the interbellum. These armed civilians were ONLY the "resistants of the last days"... a true resistant would NOT commit such a stupidities. (after the war, they tried to let those morons to be trialed, but the hate against the Gemans was still so deep that they were

    acquitted)

  • @berrycccc I was yet a scoolboy when the war broke out, and it were the Canadian forces who liberated us in the night of 31 oct./1 nov '44.

But... those veterans are mistaking thmselves (8:04-8:29 min.): 1) many of this women were yet married with a German BEFORE the war. 2) a lot of these men & women were FALSELY accused: If a person had quarrel with his neighbour, or...if a woman once had refused to sleep with somebody, he just had to say that those person was a ex-nazifriend.

  • thank you very much for this video wonderfull I was in the canadian navy on air craft carrier called hms puncher in 1944 and was in Holland for the liberation and cannot forget the reception we received thank very much. I have bee trying to have a windmill instaled in ottawa ont for 2 years to honour the canadian veterans and the dutch people.
