I was looking through old files I had saved, and found this little clip
I am not sure where it comes from, but it's interesting as it shows
The potential her voice had when she was 19 years old

  • Of course, but I'm not sure whether Christina knows, which is why I put big in quotes hehe. Definitely agree with that last line there....like good ol' Whit

  • @TheModeleParfait

Exactly :) like Whitney would do it For me the mark of a truly great vocalist is when they can handle a difficult song with the illusion of ease.

  • @MrButler124 Haley has a natural rasp to her voice: you can tell, because her natural timbre in her mid-range has those characteristics. However, Christina definitely doesn't have a natural rasp, because within her connected range, her voice is very clear and rich. What you hear from Christina is NOT rasp, but rather an extremely strained sound.

I haven't heard enough of that Haley girl to know for certain, I don't watch Idol

But when people talk about raspy voices like Adele, Amy Winehouse, Duffy, etc

I don't hear a natural rasp, I hear smoking and drinking and a particular imposition in the voice, not natural. If anything the one naturally raspy voice I've heard is Nana Mouskouri, because her vocal cords are or uneven length.

I think a lot of singers think pushing or grunting/growling is necessary for a big voice

Quite the opposite, a big voice comes out by opening the throat (lowering larynx, lifting soft palate) and keeping a solid breathe support. Singing is simple, breathe-support-project, shouldn't sound like it hurts...and I think the greatest art in singing is when a singer sings something difficult and makes it appear like it's not difficult at all.

  • @primohomme

Oh, definitely. Although, part of me is afraid that she will be too stubborn to change her sound....like she's afraid she will lose her "big" voice that others compliment her on. I do like the occasional rasp, but hearing her destroy Fighter and Beautiful EVERY performance is just too much (especially because Fighter is a favorite of mine).

  • @primohomme Having a raspy voice, especially when it is naturally so (from what I see, Haley Reinhart IS that way) is fine, IMHO. Losing your natural timbre because you're straining like a mule when belting, like Christina does, is not.

  • @primohomme Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm wow. well either way, it can't be helped(without them knowing how to do it) I mean, what would one have to do to keep good vocal hygiene and "lose" the rasp. I just saw some very recent performances of haley, her voice was pretty clear but the rasp was still intact very much. Sooo you don't believe anyone in the world has a "truely" raspy voice then?

  • @olympia13131

You could argue Christina has one of the best voices of our time, but that she is one of the best vocalists? Not really...

  • THE QUEEN IS THE BEST VOCALIST OF OUR TIME. SHE IS UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER GREATS SUCH AS WHITNEY, CELINE AND MARIAH IN TERMS OF HER VOCAL ABILITY.
