"Nunavik: Building on the Knowledge of Ancestors"
Robyn Bryant, Avataq Cultural Institute
Nunavik, which means "the place where we live" in Inuktitut, is one of Canada's four Inuit regions. Lying north of the 55th parallel in the province of Québec, Nunavik stretches over more than 500,000 km2 of environmental wonders, including rocky tundra patterned with fresh water rivers and lakes, mountains and many offshore islands.

We thank you for your comment. The Museum makes every effort to ensure that the information provided is as accurate as possible however some errors can occur. Opinions vary as to the definition of the term Nunavik. Some have adopted the well-known definition "the place where we live". For others the term refers to a "vast territory but with the pending notion of a place favorable to inhabitation". The term Iluilik is synonymous to Nunavik but without the idea of a place favorable to inhabitation
