Study is underway to find better ways to control both the disease and its costs

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) January 2014 -- A national study is underway to better understand how to help asthma patients cut down on their medications, when appropriate, while controlling the disease and its costs.

Between medication, lost productivity and time off from school, asthma costs $56 billion dollars a year in the US - that's $150 million every day.

"We need to find a way to help patients control their asthma without over-medicating them," said John Mastronarde, MD, who is leading the study at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. "The problem is, someone has an asthma attack, their doctor boosts their medication to control it, and in many cases, the patient is never weaned back down," said Mastronarde.

Ultimately, that strategy can lead to more problems. Higher doses of medicine can carry long-term side effects and can cost up to $500 per month, creating "a real hurdle for people to stay compliant and take their medication every day," said Mastronarde.

Doctors will follow 450 patients for nearly a year at 18 research centers across the country to determine which drugs should be given at what dose and for how long.
