Handel specialists mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly (as the Israelitish Man), and soprano Rosemary Joshua (as the Isrealitish Woman) sing the closing duet: "O, lovely peace" from Part 3 of the oratorio "Judas Maccabeus", by G.F. Handel. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra is conducted by William Christie.

Israelitish Woman (and Man)
"O lovely peace, with plenty crown'd,
Come, spread thy blessings all around.
Let fleecy flocks the hills adorn,
And valleys smile with wavy corn.
Let the shrill trumpet cease, nor other sound
But nature's songsters wake the cheerful morn.
O lovely peace. . . da capo"

From the opening concert of the Edinburgh International Festival, 14 August 2009.

  • Absolutely delicious! With wavy corn indeed, thank you for this absolutely lovely piece (and the lovely peace that goes with it)> ♥

  • @Ravenelvenlady So glad you liked it. Their Handel duets disc is delicious too.

  • The Handel Duets disc with Sarah Connolly and Rosemary Joshua is now out - some absolutely lovely singing on it (available from Amazon and many other sellers). According to a "blog interview with the SC and RJ on the Chandos label website, they both are particularly happy with the tracks from "Theodora" and I have to say that as far as "Streams of Pleasure" is concerned, this is an absolutely accurate description of my reaction to that track...

  • Thanks for posting this, melodiaavis! These are 2 of my favorite Handel mezzo's and sopranos!

  • You are most welcome. Sarah Connolly and Rosemary Joshua are going to be putting out a new disc of Handel duets this spring - something to look forward to!
