This is part 1 of 2 of a HUD* view of an airshow. It was recorded by an F-14 crew during a show at NAS Moffett field, near San Francisco, California. The base has since been closed.

(* HUD = Heads-Up Display. There's a forward looking camera in the nose of the aircraft. Its view is combined with the electronic display shown to the pilot and recorded onto tape. This is also known as a "gun camera" view. The symbols show the aircraft's attitude, altitude, airspeed, "alpha" (angle of attack).

In combat various other information can be included, such as gun trajectory aiming point, aircraft "predictor," aiming point for radar missiles and circle of sensitivity for infra-red seeking missiles. The Navy uses black-and-white video, some Air Force aircraft use color.

  • Is that the RIO doing most of the talking? Do they also have spotters down giving input on their demo?

  • @mechan9 - It's another pilot in the RIO seat. Don't think this guy had spotters. You'd hear 'em on the radio. All you hear is the 2 in the A/C and the tower.

  • @KutWrite It's a RIO in the RIO seat.

  • @flysupertomcat1 - Not sure, because it sounds like he's training him to do a show like this one. RIOs usually have a different dialog with the pilot.

  • Is there no airspeed and altitude indicators on the F-14 HUD ?

  • @dekiplav1 They have several modes, but no, I don't thnk so. It was an early introduction of the technology. Remember, the F-14 was implemented in the early 70s.

  • @NukeSocks

The beeping you hear is in fact the distance warning at that point the pilot was under 150 feet without his gear out. At that point the alarm goes off letting him/her know it's time to pull up.

  • @KutWrite I'm sure. I have footage of the last ever Tomcat demo and an interview with the Pilot/RIO discussing how they fly a demo and they played the audio and it sounds very similar. The RIO is the pilot's back up, the pilot is busy flying the show so the RIO keeps him updated on air speed, altitude, location, maneuvers and so on.

  • Is the beeping at the 1:44 mark a ground distance warning?

  • @KutWrite it looks like a part of the HUD, probably the speed and altitude is on the right and left side i think you just cant see it

  • What a display of power!!!

  • Is this Snodgrass flying?
