Interviewer: Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel Part of the Diamonstein-Spielvogel Video Archive in the Duke University Libraries: http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/dsva/
Diamonstein-Spielvogel interviews Samaras concerning his life, works, career, and his philosophy of art.
he was a visiting artist when i first met him. I was a student at the boston museum school. when i presented him with a modest gift of this rustic, organic tree root, he said to me "never give things away. let others pay you for things you give them." somehow he immediately recognized in my character, a certain flaw, a propensity to be too generous. i think he wanted me to value my good intent and to expect something in exchange for it's virtue. Ive always loved him, his unrepentant ego.
