I hear a noise similar to this all the time. Sometimes worse, sometimes a little less. It's called tinnitus, and it can wreck your mind if you let it. I sometimes use white noise, rain sounds, trance music, didjeridu music, all kinds of stuff to mask the sound, when I am trying to get to sleep.
