(from above)... in my city a few years ago that, well, was basically Gale Edwards' production but with no credit given or mention of inspiration in the director's notes. It was for charity so I think people turned a bit of a blind eye, but it was still weird and I'm not sure how the director would have felt when all the reviews raved about his amazing vision and daring originality etc, etc.

For lots of shows, I think part of the licensing/peformance rights agreement is that companies still have to put in the program at least who the original producer/s and director/s were, ie Trevor Nunn in 'Les Miz' or whatever, but I'm not sure about JCS. Even if it's not a legal requirement to give credit, it's kind of poor form and they're a bit naive if they think nobody will notice. Or maybe not. A production of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' got done ... (cont'd)

something i'd be interested to know, too. a local director in my area got into some hot water regarding a certain show he put up annually that more or less photo copied the Broadway staging.

Didn't make myself clear, apologies. Of course she didn't invent the concept of making it contemporary but as you point out certain original elements do get used by other productions and because I know jack about how things work, I'm not sure how much credit directors take for stuff that isn't entirely theirs.

I think to say she "created" the idea of modernizing JCS is to take things a little far. I'll agree that there a serious shades of her specific interpretation here.

The director who created the concept in the mid 90s of "modernising" the production and including elements like the riot in the 'Simon Zealotes' song was Australian director Gale Edwards. Because this production was made into a DVD her concepts seem to get, well, plagiarised a lot. Do directors of productions that "copy" hers give credit?

I have to agree. The staging is effective, and the coreography is great (powerful, simple, and doesnt distract from the lyrics). Great job.
