That camera audio gain is always too low on all external microphones that I've tried. One way of boosting volume is from a command-line video processing tool like this: (also converts to mono)
mencoder -ovc lavc -oac mp3lame -af channels=1,volume=30 infile.MOV -o outfile.AVI
I often add switches to shrink the video a little: -lavcopts vcodec=msmpeg4:vbitrate=3000
If you prefer GUI instead of command prompt, similar effects can be achieved with tools likes "MPEG Stream Clip" etc.

@boredvalleykid Or simply turning up the volume on the camera. It would help to edit the audio too to switch it from mono to "stereo".

Love your camera stand,10 points for thinking, I love simple solutions. Yeah your sound levels are a bit low and maybe you could have adjusted it in camera. I just reviewed Giant Squid's Podcasting Stereo Lavalier mic on my Zi8, its a great microphone, check it out.
