The aim of this report is to provide a description of the issues concerning British Sign Language/English Interpreters in Yorkshire and The Humber and nationally. The outcome of the survey shows a lack of Interpreters, both in the region and at national level. The recommendations included in the report aim to address some of the main barriers preventing more people becoming BSL/English Interpreters, as indicated by the survey.
"In April 2007, CACDP reported that 469 BSL-English Interpreters were registered with them in England and Wales: this means that there is roughly 1 registered interpreter for every 106 Deaf people who need them."
The report was commissioned by the Regional Language Network Yorkshire & The Humber and will be officially launched by its author, Ms Helen Tagg, at the Leeds Society for Deaf and Blind people on December 13th 2007.

I am pleased with the solutions proposed, but there is one area of interpreting that has not got a mention in this report.
What about video interpreting access? This is a real solution to the shortage over the short term as an interpreter can now work for up to 12 different deaf customers in a day as opposed to two or three face to face.
I believe this research has not been completely done if this emergent technology which is being used effectively in South & in the USA.
