I had the rare opportunity to visit the Khao Luang Cave Temple this past summer (2009). It is located just outside the city of Phetchaburi (Phetburi), Thailand.
The Khao Luang Cave is regarded as one of the most important caves in Thailand because the Buddha images that are enshrined within the cave were placed here by King Mongut (known as Rama IV), who often used the cave for meditation and studying before he ascended the throne. These Buddha images are located some 90 feet below the ground in a limestone cavern. The hole in earth above allows filtered sunlight to light up parts of the cave. There are three chambers in this complex in all and they hold numerous Buddha images.
An old legend told by Phetchaburi people for centuries is that the entrance of this cave at this monastery is the entrance of a twilight zone town where the inhabitants are only young maidens.
