  • @lumberjack5 That's in relation to the sizes of the goal. Look at the area a field hockey keeper has to protect, and the area an ice/floor hockey goalie has to. The ice hockey goalie can go into a butterfly and still use his blocker or glove to make an elevated save and cover most of the net, but if a field hockey keeper did the butterfly the entire net would be open. Fh keepers cannot hold ball, it's only meant to be rebounded away that's why they need to constantly be on their feet for shots.

  • @lumberjack5 yea it's strictly standing up and diving. There is a certain technique used for block-tackles, but it's not advisable if you don't have alot of expirience, since it tends to bust up your knee and/or leg quite bad if you don't know what you're doing.

  • I don't mean to sound stupid. I don't play field hockey and just started getting in to it. But I do play goalie in dek hockey and a bit of roller hockey, and I watch a lot of ice hockey, and goalies play in a style called butterfly in those. It's when both leg pads are placed horizontally on the ground to stop shots. So, just a simple question lol, do goalies in field hockey ever use butterfly, or is it strictly just standing and diving and what not?

  • I have been playing goalie for 12 years and this is no how I learned at all. There are some of the basics you need but other wise it is better to learn from a experience goalie.

  • these aren't skills, its just something you do when you are for your first time GK, when you have skills, you really know what to do.

  • personally, i really don't like heading the ball. my helmet isn't that fantastic anyways, and i always get somewhat stunned. i would much rather use my hands.

also, i found that kicking the ball came natural for me because i played soccer for years before starting field hockey.

  • basic skills? this goalie first should learn to shift his weight to the front when kicking the ball...

  • @cartmanthefatass nooo if it a good shot your helmet might get a crack making it useless, plus rebounds are unpredictable and uncontrollable just use your handsXD

  • I'm not sure bout trying to tackle like ur out field player that a little too casual. Dnt worry bout saving with ur head i've done intentionally loads of times saved a couple of drag flicks that way lol

  • wow...this is terrible...to title it "skills" puts chills through my body both as a keeper and a coach...i love that there are videos out there to help young keepers learn, but it worries me that they are learning things such as to tackle rather than slide, and using their head rather than hands??!!
