Performance at Swarthmore U, Philadelphia 4/24/09. Adzohu is from the Fon people (closely related to the Ewe) of Togo. It chronicles the battle between ancestral Ewes and colonial occupation in West Africa.
The shorter dances tell a story which is usually spoken to the audience before each section. Listen to the spoken language and then hear the same words spoken on the master drum.
The longer Ago section is "knocking on the door" of the spirit world, asking for permission to enter. Heavy use of polyrhythm is a clue that this section has a spiritual purpose.
Very nice performance! -Peter
