A presentation on phonics and the SPHERIC method of teaching given to the Fukui chapter of JALT on February 1, 2009 at the Fukui Campus of the Open University of Japan (放送大学). SPHERIC stands for Synthetic PHonics, Engaged Reading, and Integrated Communication. It advocates using a Synthetic Phonics system as the core of a curriculum supported by communicative activities and extensive-intensive reading. The model curriculum proposed was based on the structural constraints of the Nagahama Elementary School English Program (NESEP), but is flexible enough to be applied to a variety of contexts. The materials around which the curriculum proposal was based were obtained by license from: www.readinga-z.com
(Apologies for problems with the audio. There used to be a bunch of static and pops on this section. I couldn't diagnose the problem so in some areas I just had to mute the pops and cut out some corrupted bits. I think the flow is still pretty understandable though. Thanks for watching.)
