1991 World Cup of Walking

The 15th IAAF World Racewalking Cup was held June 1 and 2, 1991 in San Jose, California. In the 50Km event, held June 2, Chief Judge Gary Westerfield had some difficulty in convincing leader Andrey Perlov that he had been disqualified.

A few years later, an even bigger controversy arose when Mexico's Bernardo Segura was notified of his DQ after finishing first in the Olympic 20Km and while on the phone with Mexico's president. This led to changes to speed up the notification process for athletes to minimize post race DQ's.
However, in Perlov's case as shown in the video, he was told to stop a full 2Km before the finish, one complete lap.

I competed in the U.S. qualifier for this race and in it, one of the athletes knocked the warning paddle out of the Chief Judge's hands.

I am aware of incidents where judges have been assaulted by angry parents, received death threats (happened to me once) and have had their rulings overturned by meet directors who didn't like the outcome. And you wonder why they aren't lining up to become judges.

i just want to clarify any confusion, and stop any further discussion. this is the most awful and retarded sport in the history of athletics. putting the scrabble world championships on ESPN was a better idea than the sport of racewalking. all racewalkers suck and all racewalking proponents suck even more
