I wanted to say that I find your statement, "I really feel like I don't have a resposibility to live up to someone else's value system, I only have a responsibility to myself" to be really profound. It reminds me of a quote by Robert Heinlein "I am free, no matter what rules surround me....I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do." How liberating to realize that value systems are subjective, and the only person one is ultimately responsible to is oneself.
