I found something interesting in the 24th chapter of Luke.
In verse 7 it says how Jesus would rise on the 3rd day.
Verse 12 mentions Peter going to the tomb (on Sunday).
Verse 13 says how two men were walking on "that same day" (Sunday).
In verse 21 the men say "it IS the 3rd day".
So Sunday was the 3rd day.

Brother Ken, evening and the MORNING were the 1st day (Gen 1:5). Mk 16:2 they came unto the sepulchre at the RISING OF THE SUN. Q.1. Is that evening time? Another clue...Jn 20:16 after Jesus spoke to her, Mary supposed he was the gardener. Q.2. How many gardeners do you know, go to start their work at the beginning of night fall? See Jn 20:1 compare Mk 16:2 it fits like a glove. Blessings in the Lord. Brother Adrian.

All; Lk 23:54,56, Mark 15:42 and John 19:31 refer to THE sabbath, John 19:31 empthasizes for THAT sabbath day was an high day, ie the first rest day of the passover feast, thus it was more highly esteemed. Jesus was buried before sun-set on what we call Friday. To understand the Hebraic mind-set on what 3 days & 3 nights actually mean, turn to the O.T Esther 4:16, 5:1 & 2 Chron 10:5,12. Jesus knew what he meant with the sign of Jonas, so did his hearers. see John 27:63-64 UNTIL the Third day.

The two sabbaths of that week were on the same day (as the regular sabbath) which is why John called it (the passover sabbath) a 'high day'. Because it was more esteemed, due to the fact that the regular 7th day sabbath also coincided with the holy day sabbath (the 1st sabbath day rest of the passover celebration, see John 18:28, 19:14) .
The High Sabbaths are seven annual Biblical festivals and rest days, recorded in the books of Exodus and Deuteronomy. They are called high Sabbaths regardless if they fall on a weekly Saabbath or not. Jn 19:31-47 Jesus was buried before Nisan 15.Thurs.
Lk 23:54 Jesus laid in tomb 1st sabbath drew on. Lk 23:56 Fri woman prepared spices..rested on weekly sabbath Lk 24:1 visited tomb and Jesus was gone.
