NOVA (PBS) Season 26 - Episode 11 - 1999/01/12 - The Beast of Loch Ness

To most of us, the Loch Ness Monster is little more than a fairy tale, a product of overactive imaginations and the Scottish tourist industry. Not so for the thousands of local residents who've reported seeing a mysterious animal in the loch, nor for the generations of investigators and scientists who've used the latest technology to probe the cold, murky depths of Britain's largest lake.

Twenty-five years ago, MIT-trained investigators Bob Rines and Charlie Wyckoff used side sonar and strobe photography to produce the most intriguing evidence yet for the monster's existence. Now, disappointed by the lack of follow-up by professional scientists, they return to Scotland for one last go at "Nessie." Join NOVA as it follows this latest expedition and conducts its own investigation into a mystery that has fascinated millions for more than 60 years. As Rines and Wyckoff scour the loch with today's sophisticated sonar, scientists explore the loch's ecosystem and geological history for clues, and the most famous photo of Nessie is put to the test, with surprising results. Decide for yourself: Is Nessie an optical illusion, a fantastic hoax - or a species undiscovered by science?

  • Just seeing all that water and what could be down there give me the creeps!

  • The only way we're ever going to figure this out is if some enthusiast hits the lotto and donates a couple million to fund a real search with modern equipment, performed by people who aren't skeptical. I play the same numbers every week so.... lol... hopefully soon :-)

  • I dive frequently and no one could pay me enough to go in those waters. even seeing the cameras go under gives me the heebie-jeebies

  • @Madams1977 A Japanese sub already did an extensive search and came up with nothing conclusive the most plausible explanation my be that very old logs fill with methane gas then rise to the surface and break the surface jutting out for a couple of seconds.

  • It seems like everyone is rushing in and saying "I saw the loch ness monster.." juz to have their 15 mins of fame...... Pathetic!

  • Are they trying to say that 'credible witnesses' can't/don't lie?????? Pssshhhhhh!!!! Wat world are they living in???!!!!! Becoz they come across as civilized/credible members of society, naturally u would believe wat they told u.....even if it were a lie!

  • Great documentary. Its music is quite eerie too

  • why not give all the witnesses a polygraph test, i think that would clear up some evidence

  • Rhines is a pseudoscientist. .

  • I believe it could exist but I don't believe it exists. This may sound stupid but I think they should get permission from the Scottish government to make a dam at both ends of the loch, pump all of the water from the loch into the ocean and when they are done searching let the water back into the loch. Also do this in all landlocked lakes around the world where they believe this creature to be.
