Spencer Tracy was a very complex man who sought directness with his unseen audience. He had an ability to commnunicate thru the camera that boardered on magic and yet he totally ignored the camera, and only communicated with his fellow actors. He was the most human of human beings and according to a frend who was a Supreme court justice, he was the most american of americans. Rest in peace Spencer!

He could be a very difficult man as he was an alcoholic, probably manic depressive and a real hellraiser and womanizer, especially in his early Hollywood days. But, according to his children, he was a great dad who visited them often, couldn't divorce his wife, not because of anything catholic but in many ways he had tremendous respect for his wife Louise and all she did deaf children. I think that's why he readily did this PSA.

I heard Katharine Hepburn say that Spencer found acting easy, but life hard. I think he was a very complicated, somewhat troubled guy.
