SCIENCE is useful but that is not all it is. Science can be uplifting, thrilling, life-enhancing. Originally broadcast on Britain's Channel 4 in 1996, Break the Science Barrier follows the Oxford Biologist Richard Dawkins as he meets with people who have experienced the wonders of science first-hand. We meet the astronomer who first discovered pulsars, the geneticist who invented DNA fingerprinting, a scientist who discovered a protein that causes cancer, and others. Dawkins interviews famous admirers of science such as Douglas Adams and David Attenborough, and asks them why science means so much to them. We also see how dangerous ignorance of science can be in classrooms, courts, and beyond.

With so many expressing paranormal beliefs and ignorance of science, Dawkins encourages viewers to contrast these ancient superstitions with the power and beauty of our scientific achievements and understanding.

  • "Lets have a girl for Jesus Christ shall we?"

    Thats so Richard Dawkins. :)

  • I could watch Dawkins' material all day. Unfortunately, after about a month, I've seen about everything and wish I had new material to cover. Perhaps onto Hitchens now...

  • @OnlinePokerCowboy I agree= but if you look at these "super geniuses" most come from middle class upbringing suggesting that they would always push their child's intelligence. Therefore genetics is not the only reason for intelligence or anything else for that matter. in WW1, British officers were on average 5 inches taller than privates

  • @dancthegr I dont know much about the subject, or the studies ur talking about, but i have heard of associating genetics with 'super genius's', with a possible outcome they were hoping for being able to predict if a child was capable of doing extraudinary things from as young as 3 or 4 through genetics and brain scanning.

This isnt arrogant, the fact genetics do influence someones base intelligence could render certain individuals incapable of accomplishing what people like Einstein have.

  • @OnlinePokerCowboy good point but what I am saying is that many arrogant scientists think that the only thing that matters is genetic coding; which isn't always the case= sociological, psychological and political theories are just as important

  • @dancthegr 'Science cant prove everything', so what? That doesnt entail using unscientific random theories as a substitute...

As for there being no role of genetics in intelligence, i think ull find the brain is an organ like any other and therefore will always have some % of gentic weakness and strength passed down the line. U are right in that this isnt the biggest determining factor tho, education standard, willingness to learn, money, health and mostly curiosity will play bigger roles.

  • Richard Dawkins didn't come to my school :^(

    luckiest...kids...ever...

  • Holy crap It drives me nuts to see kids scrape emery boards across their fingers! Might as well run them down the chalkboard.

Doesn't detract from the awesomeness of the message. Dawkins FTW!

  • @NUTCASE71733 no what I am getting at is science can't prove everything

  • @dancthegr

    You are an idiot.

  • @dancthegr as i said; aquire information, then go on to have a chat about the information you've seen.
